Bully-Free Zone.

Our curriculum includes principles and techniques from jiu jitsu, judo, and muay thai that will teach your child well-rounded self-defense skills. They will learn responsibility, respect, discipline in a structured and fun environment. Watch their confidence in their ability grow on and off the mat the more they advance and especially if they compete.

We do things a little different…

Only at Orlando BJJ are your kids able to work towards getting promoted in Judo and Jiu Jitsu simultaneously.

In Judo class they will learn traditional gi (kimono) techniques focused on takedowns but also includes some groundwork. Our Judo curriculum follows the IJF’s requirements for belt promotion and in addition, requires our kid’s to also learn leg attacks, as opposed to just upper body throws.

Our kids Jiu Jitsu classes are all no-gi, meaning without the kimono (pictured here), making it more realistic for real life situations and simplifies learning. No-gi Jiu Jitsu is very similar to submission grappling and uses techniques from judo, jiu jitsu, and wrestling. Some believe no-gi is the future of jiu jitsu.

We believe cross-training in judo and no-gi jiu jitsu is the best pairing for well-rounded grapplers whether in self defense situations or especially, in competition.

Watch an interview with our Judo instructor discussing how cross training has made him into the olympic-level athlete he is today, here.

Jiu Jitsu vs. Other Arts

We don’t teach “feel-good techniques” such as board breaking, that are relatively easy to do and have little purpose.

Jiu jitsu teaches real-life skills and self-defense that have been proven to work against resisting opponents.

  1. NON-VIOLENT: Jiu Jitsu will teach your child the skills needed to control another person without use of kicks, punches, violence or weapons. Instead of hard kicks and punches that rely on brute strength and can also cause injury to yourself, BJJ focuses on ground fighting that will teach them how to take the opponent to the ground, control them and apply submissions (if necessary) such as chokes that will render your opponent unconscious or joint locks that can break arms, wrists, legs, etc. Jiu jitsu techniques utilize concepts such as momentum, leverage, and strategy, that are designed to work against larger, stronger opponents making it ideal for women and children.

  2. REAL-LIFE RESISTANCE: Unlike other popular children’s martial arts that practice forms individually, BJJ techniques require a partner to work with that offer real resistance that better simulates real life situations and provides and extra element of socialization and team building. Students can practice, drill and spar full contact with their partners without risk of injury because they always have the ability to simply “tap” if they want their partners to stop and reset.

  3. DEVELOPS CHARACTER: Our program instills respect, discipline, patience and responsibility through a structured curriculum and interaction with the instructors and other children. Kid’s with higher belts are expected to make new students feel welcome and help them improve just the like higher belts before them. Jiu jitsu is hard and doing hard things together as a team develops sportsmanship and makes getting a belt promotion or winning at a tournament all the more sweeter.

  4. MENTAL & PHYSICAL: Jiu jitsu is often referred to as human chess because the game aspect of jiu jitsu is quite similar in that there are endless moves, setups, counters and strategies that can end in one opponent having no more options. A checkmate is to chess what the tap is to jiu jitsu. In BJJ, your mind is working just as hard as your body making it a true whole body workout. Your child will not only gain skills in self defense and sport jiu jitsu, but problem solving and critical thinking as well.

  5. FUN: Most importantly, it’s fun! Kids have a natural tendency to want to grapple or wrestle around with other kids anyway, so why not teach them how to properly do it in a way that is safe, teaches them real skills and tires them out all at once. They are so busy having fun they don’t even realize how good it is for them!
